Summer Enrichment
Dear Lionheart Families,
As the school year concludes and summer begins, we are excited to provide your child with a Summer Enrichment Packet. The primary goal of this packet is to help prevent the effects of “Summer Slide”. Summer Slide refers to the tendency for students to lose some of the academic gains they’ve made during the school year when learning is paused for an extended period.
Rather than pushing ahead into new material, this packet is designed to help students maintain skills and knowledge they’ve worked so hard to develop. It is about preservation, not advancement. At Lionheart Classical Academy, we understand and deeply value the importance of rest, play, and quality family time during the summer months. We also believe that a healthy engagement of the mind can be part of that fun. Summer should be a joyful time for your children to explore, imagine, and make memories. And when learning is woven into that experience, it creates a smoother transition into the new school year and helps children return feeling confident and capable.
What is Included: All of the materials below are optional but highly encouraged to support your child’s continued growth and confidence over the summer. They are designed to be engaging, flexible, and family-friendly.
- Family Book Club & Suggested Reading (All Grades) – Each grade level has a recommended book accompanied by discussion questions to help families engage in meaningful conversations and support comprehension. We encourage families to treat this as a Family Book Club—a fun, shared activity that brings reading to life. Perhaps you can use a book club as an opportunity to connect with cousins, grandparents, or friends in other places. You’ll also find a Suggested Reading List curated by grade to inspire further reading. The suggested reading lists are just that – suggestions – and all reading is beneficial and strongly encouraged!
- Math Packet (All Grades) – A review packet designed to help students retain math skills and reinforce key concepts from the school year. Completing it is optional but strongly encouraged to keep math thinking active over the summer.
- Literacy Packet (Incoming Grades 1–4) – A supportive packet to help younger students practice foundational reading and writing skills through fun and engaging activities.
- IXL Information (Incoming Grades 4–8) – Digital support for continued practice in math and language arts, available at your family’s convenience.
An Additional Note on Math
The table to the right outlines the expected math fact fluency by grade level based on the Singapore Math approach, which emphasizes building a strong foundation of number sense and automaticity. Automaticity is defined as the ability to recall facts accurately in 3 seconds or less.
Students of all ages should be practicing their math facts until they are fully mastered. You can useflash cards, playing cards, board games, apps, dominos or other toys, printed worksheets or any othertools to keep it fun and fresh.
Incoming Grade | |
---|---|
1st | Addition and subtraction to 10 |
2nd | Addition and subtraction to 20 |
3rd | Addition and subtraction to 20 Multiplication facts 1 to 5 and 10 |
4th - 8th | Addition and subtraction to 20 Multiplication and division to 12 |
Practical Ways to Keep Learning Alive
In addition to the optional work provided, learning can and should be integrated into everyday summer activities. Here are some simple, meaningful ways to support learning while enjoying your time together as a family:
- Grades K–2: Write postcards to family members, count and sort seashells at the beach, or read signs aloud on road trips.
- Grades 3–5: Create a packing list for a trip, help cook or bake using recipes (incorporating fractions, proportions, and measurement), or keep a travel journal.
- Grades 6–8: Plan a family outing using a map, calculate costs for a grocery list, gasoline fill-up, or tip at a restaurant, discuss books over dinner, or gamify math facts to build fluency and automaticity.
Every small moment of purposeful interaction helps build a child’s confidence and readiness for the year ahead. We hope you enjoy using the packet not as a burden, but as a tool to maintain the rich learning your child has accomplished this year. We wish you a joyful, restorative, and enriching summer. Thank you for partnering with us to support your child’s academic journey.
Cheers,
The Lionheart Classical Academy Faculty
